Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done,
on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
The opening of the Our Father is given by Jesus Christ during the Sermon on the Mount, when His disciples ask Him how to pray:
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” — Gospel of Matthew 6:9
A shorter form is also recorded in the Gospel of Luke, given in response to the same request:
“Father, hallowed be your name.” — Luke 11:2
The prayer continues as a model for all Christian prayer, teaching trust in God as Father, dependence on Him for daily needs, and a call to forgiveness and holiness.
